Personality:
Gomez is not a complicated man. He has several outstanding personality characteristics that seem to define and structure his life, characteristics which seem at odds with his morbid habits and his family’s general tendency towards death, unpleasantness, and mayhem. Gomez is an optimist, a romantic, a devoted husband, father, and family man, and playful to a fault. None of these traits seem to have any deep, dark meaning or purpose, as Gomez is fairly honest and straightforward, with little ulterior motive for anything he does every displayed. What you see with Gomez is generally what you get.

His wife lovingly agrees with a description of him as a loafer, a hopeless layabout, and a shiftless dreamer, and indeed, he seems to spend most of his time in leisure pursuits – golfing, chess, darts, crashing his model trains into each other, sword fighting with his unwilling accountant, playing games with his children such as Wake The Dead in which they dig up the graves of dead family members. He tends to be very enthusiastic with all of his pursuits; Gomez is not the kind of person to go at anything with half measures, even fun. He has apparently enormous amounts of money, and doesn’t need to work, though he does appear to be fairly well-educated. Despite this, Gomez can appear to be stupid at times, or at least naïve. He tends to trust very easily, even very suspiciously acting characters.

But this might have more to do with his boundless optimism than his intelligence. While he can be prone to the occasional gloomy moment, in general Gomez assumes that everything will turn out for the best. He’s cheerful much of the time, and often shrugs off warnings from others that things might turn out badly. Every year for 25 years he held a séance for his missing brother, where others might have given up long before. While there seems to be a reason for this optimism – he leads a somewhat charmed life, with all his money, loving family, and good fortune – he nevertheless constantly assumes the best of people, assumes they have more skill than they actually do, thinks people like him who don’t really, and overall believes things will always turn out for the best.

Another important part of Gomez’s life is his devotion to romance. His is still passionately in love with his wife, and they frequently engage in rather risqué displays of affection in front of whoever happens to be around, including strangers, their children, and people who are threatening to kill them. He becomes enflamed whenever she says anything in French, and has to stop whatever he’s doing so he can kiss up her arm. They’re portrayed as frequently either running off to have sex, or talking about it, and Gomez likes to take Morticia on romantic evenings out, despite the fact that they’ve been married for many years. But more than just his great love for his wife, Gomez also enjoys romantic ideals and imagery. While other members of his family may try to attack with poison (all of them), electric chairs (his daughter), or dynamite (his brother), Gomez prefers the fencing sword, and quite enjoys spirited, swash-buckling style duels. He’s an accomplished dancer, and something of a flirt, though this never gets in the way of his relationship with his wife. Gomez often plays the role of the gentleman and gallant with women.

But perhaps the most important thing in Gomez’s life is his family, and his devotion to them. Gomez is the kind of man it’s hard to imagine alone – while some of his past times are solitary, such as his model train set, he mostly seems to seek out and revel in the company of others, especially his family. Strangers are readily invited into the Addams home and entertained, and he loves to show off, but he is obviously the most comfortable and happy with his family, both immediate and extended. He will do anything for them, not only risk his life, but even brave saccharine elementary school theater performances. He never seems to resent the presence of his children, and looks upon their antics with great affection, even though he is sometimes at a loss to keep them from trying to murder each other. He is content even with his mother-in-law’s presence, something few men can say, and views the Addams’ servants as part of the family, too.
